Inspection cycles and the public record
Requirements differ by state, and the direction is the same everywhere: inspect on a cycle, then put the findings in front of the public. Virginia writes that duty down in the most detail today, so it is the clearest illustration of what a division has to be ready for.
HB 2618, the Virginia example
Every four years, Virginia divisions must complete a certified HVAC and indoor air quality inspection and publish a corrective action report at a public school board meeting and on their website.
